Hockey Honors Seniors With Big Win

Drew 5, Elmira 0

Drew University Field Hockey honored their six seniors today at Ranger Stadium with a non-conference victory over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles 5-0.  Elizabeth Law and Nicole DiBattista represented the class of 2010 in the scoreboard.  The underclassmen also made some noise for Drew as Meghan Howlett and Sarah Charles scored as well.

Drew got on the board 15 minutes into the half when Howlett cracked a shot at Elmira Keeper Jalene McCulloch who made the save.  Law was there to pick up the rebound and tied her personal scoring record by netting her 13th.    The Rangers extended their lead just five minutes later when Howlett broke away from the Elmira defense at midfield line.  DiBattista kept up with the breakaway and was there to pick up Howlett's cross just a few feet in front of the goal.  DiBattista slid past the goal line and somehow managed to get her stick on the ball to chip in her 10th of the season.

The Eagles had a few chances in the first half.  Megan Werner created a break away of her own but the Drew all time save leading keeper, Stef Rutkowski was there to make the stop.  The Eagles defense also came up big in the first half, Jennifer Heydt worked hard to get defensive save.  McClulloch recorded 15 saves off 19 Ranger shots.  Senior Allison Holsinger took over in the cage for Elmira in the second period.

The second half was just as prosperous for Drew offense.  Howlett connected on a goal of her own using a backhand shot after starting another breakaway at the midfield line.  DiBattista continued her spectacular play as she notched her fourth defensive save of the season.  She also scooped up another goal after beating an Elmira defender and keeper in the match's 30th minute.  The Rangers were not done yet, DiBattista fed Sarah Charles a perfect pass from outside the circle for their 5th goal of the match.  Rutkowski recored two saves during her 70 minutes of play.

Elmira closes their season this Saturday against Empire 8 foe, Ithaca at 1:00pm.  The Rangers end their season and hope to secure a spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs this Saturday, at Susquehanna at 1:00pm.
