Pioneers Slip Past Rangers

William Paterson 3, Drew 1

Drew scored first, but saw all momentum slip away in the final minute of the first half before falling to #20 William Paterson, 3-1.  Meghan Howlett put the Rangers in front prior to the Pioneers tying it up with less than a minute remaining in the opening period.  A pair of William Paterson goals in the second half handed the Rangers (3-1) their first loss of the season.  Christina Ayusa scored the winner for the visitors.

Drew got on the board first through Meghan Howlett.  Howlett had been one of the bright spots of Drew's strong start and was rewarded with a chance.  Mary Esposito's pass squirmed through to Howlett inside the box where the sophomore thumped in the opener.

Willy P tied the game at 1-1 with just under a minute remaining in the half.  A shot from Feroid was deflected into the middle where Chelsea Winkelspecht was able to sweep home through a crowd.

A scary moment in the final minute of the half occurred when Drew's star midfielder Nicole DiBattista was crunched in the head by a free hit from the Pioneers.  Though hit square in the head, the senior sat up quickly, easing the worries of the crowd.  Unable to return, the loss of their key player clearly effected the Rangers' performance.

The Pioneers' second goal came off a scramble following a corner.  Elizabeth Law was able to clear out an early cross, but Christina Ayusa stopped the ball near the circle.  Ayusa's ensuing shot popped up, but was able to sneak past the Rangers defense into the far corner.

Lauren Fasano kept the Rangers within one with a big kick save midway through the second half on Lauren Fazier's blast before the Pioneers did get their third with eight minutes left in the game.  A well-worked corner found Jodi Feroid open on the right side.  Feroid's blast was tipped in by Kelsey Rella to deflect past Fasano for the goal.

The loss is the Rangers' first of the season after four games.  The Pioneers improved to 3-0 with the win. Drew gets back into action on Saturday when it travels to Virginia to play in the Mapp Invitational this weekend.
