Drew field hockey staged a dramatic comeback to rally from three goals down only to succumb to the host Eagles in strokes at the Bridgewater Mapp Invitational on Sunday. The Rangers trailed by a trio of goals after just 17 minutes of play before mounting a three goal rally in the second half.
Sarah Charles netted a pair and
Elizabeth Law added another for Drew (4-2). The Eagles took the penalty stroke competition 3-0.
A disastrous start for Drew saw the Eagles score on three of their first four shots. Christina Pybus redirected Brianna Jacques' shot in the 8th minute and then stuffed in a rebound just 53 seconds later for the 2-0 lead. Eight minutes later it was 3-0 to the hosts on a Leah Cossentino tally. A timeout by Drew stopped the bleeding, but, despite better play for the Rangers, the score remained 3-0 until the break.
The Rangers came out strong in the second half, taking the period's first six shots and first five penalty corners. On that final shot and corner of the stretch,
Sarah Charles banged in her own rebound for a 3-1 scoreline with 25 minutes to play.
In the 53rd minute, Charles picked up her second of the day off
Meghan Howlett's assist. The Rangers kept up the pressure immediately following the restart, winning one corner and then another before Law smashed in the equalizer with 14 minutes remaining.
After Howlett was denied by BC keeper Elizabeth Sullivan with seven minutes left, neither squad had a great chance to grab the winner. In the first OT period,
Stef Rutkowski came up big with a pair of saves to keep the game moving, but the cracks from the desperate effort to equalize were beginning to show.
Both Law and Eggert got shots off in the second OT, but to no avail and the penalty strokes were not kind to the Rangers. Sullivan made a pair of saves while the Eagles were finding openings for a 3-0 victory in the deciding efforts. Megan Bach scored the winner for the hosts.
The Rangers now embark on a long break with ten days off before facing Montclair State two Wednesdays from now.
