Rangers Knock Off Gophers for Landmark Win

Drew men's basketball picked up its first Landmark Conference win of the season with a 50-42 victory at Goucher on Saturday night.  The Rangers handed the Gophers their first home Landmark defeat with a tremendous team defensive effort and some key plays down the stretch by their star duo of Mike Mayes and Terrell Brown.  Drew improves to 3-11, 1-3 with the win while the Gophers fall to 4-8, 2-2.  Mayes led all scorers with 17 and Brown added 11; the Rangers prevented any Gopher from reaching double figures as Trae Lindsay led the hosts with nine points.

The hard fought first half saw the Rangers enter the break up by eight, 26-18.  Drew led by six points early in the half after a Kyle Joyce three and a Brown tip-in put the guests up, 8-2.  The Rangers still led by five, 14-9, with 11 minutes remaining in the period before the Gophers mounted a comeback.  The hosts tied it at 14-14 on Shane Yambor's three with seven minutes left and took the lead on the next possession.  The teams traded baskets for the next three minutes before a Joyce three put Drew up 21-18.  After nearly 2:30 minutes of scoreless play, Mayes and Joyce finished up the scoring in the half with buckets both off Joe Horvath's assists.

The Rangers built a nine point lead, 32-23, three minutes into the second period thanks to a three from Horvath and three points from Mayes.  Goucher cut the lead to one, 34-33, on Pat Bailey's layup with 9:02 left to play.  The Rangers put their stamp on the game by responding to the Gophers' threat with a sustained run of their own.  Mike Mayes sparked the rally with a three point play.  Brown followed with a pair of free throws and then a driving layup to put Drew up 41-33.  Goucher scored four straight points welcome the final five minutes with the score at 41-37.  Brown's layup made it 43-37 and his second straight, this one off Mayes' assist, made it 45-37.  Micah Perry's jumpers pulled four points back for the hosts while Drew added just one through Brown's free throw.

Drew entered the final two minutes up by five, 46-41, before the Rangers secured the win with a solid performance down the stretch.  Joe Horvath scored on a layup off Brown's assist and Mayes followed by hitting one of two free throws after Drew was successful in killing off nearly a minute on the offensive end and forcing the Gophers into two bad shots on the defensive end.  The final minute saw each team score just one point a piece as the Rangers ran out 50-42 winners.

Mayes finished with 17 points, six rebounds and three assists.  Brown had 11 points and four rebounds despite foul trouble.  Horvath, recently the Rangers spark off the bench, had eight points and five rebounds in his first start of the season.  Kyle Joyce had nine points on 3-7 from behind the arc off the bench.  Steve Musenga had four points and eight rebounds for the Gophers while Kyle Gladden and Micah Perry each had seven points.
