Program History
Men’s basketball was introduced to the Drew University athletic program in the fall of 1930 and is one of the University's oldest sports. The basketball program became one of the most notable sports on campus after the success of legendary coach Harry Simester, who took over the program in 1935. Doubling as a baseball and basketball coach, Vince Masco took over the team in the mid-1980s and introduced some the highest-scoring teams in school history in his nine years at the helm. The Rangers won their first-ever ECAC Championship during the 1996-97 season under the guidance of Mark Coleman. Drew competed in the Middle Atlantic Conference from the 1968-69 season all the way up to 2006-07 before joining the Landmark Conference prior to the 2007-08 season. In the fall of 2008, Head Coach Darryl Keckler took over and led the Rangers to some of their most successful seasons in program history, including the 2020-21 squad that captured Drew's first Landmark Conference men's basketball title. The program's all-time winningest coach, Keckler also guided the Rangers to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20, including a school-record 23 victories in 2018-19.
