Men's Basketball Defeated by Catholic

Despite 22 points from Terrell Brown, Drew men's basketball lost to Catholic, 78-51, in Landmark Conference action on Sunday.  The host Cardinals built a big lead in the first half that the Rangers were unable to overcome in a well played second half.  Brown led all scorers with 22 points while Jason Banzhaf had 19 for the Cardinals.  Drew falls to 3-11 on the season, 1-4 in the Landmark while Catholic improves to 12-4 and 4-1.

A big first half performance from the Cardinals put Drew in a deficit from which it could not recover.  The hosts shot 55.2% from the field in the first half to go into the break up 42-20.  Banzhaf had ten in the opening period as Catholic went up 26-5 after just seven minutes of play.  The lead would reach 24 before Evan Elberg closed out the half with a pair of free throws to make it 42-20.

The second half began no better for the Rangers as the Cardinals scored 12 of the period's first 14 points, 54-22.  Nate Koening's free throws made it 63-24 with 12:49 left to play before the Rangers finished out the game with a 26-15 stretch.  Brown hit two straight layups, one off his own steal on an inbound play, and Pat Dorsey had five points in the next four minutes.  Anthony Solano, Luke Mullaney and Nick Ganzfried all got on the scoresheet before the end of the game.

Catholic hit on half of its shots in the game, 28-56, and 16-21 free throws.  The Cardinals used their hefty inside advantage to post a 45-21 rebound edge.  Drew shot 32.7% from the field and hit just 5-25 from behind the arc.
Brown led all scorers with 22 points while Pat Dorsey had seven off the bench.  Banzhaf's 19 led three Cardinals in double figures.  RJ Dixon had 13 points and six assists.

Drew looks to get back to winning ways on Tuesday night when it hosts Vaughn College at 7 pm in Baldwin Gym.
