The Drew University Rangers fell to the Goucher College Gophers, 55-49, in a low-scoring conference matchup at Baldwin Gym in Madison.
Sophomore guard, Shane Yambor led the Gophers with 15 points as they improved their record to 7-15 overall, 5-7 in Landmark Conference play.
The Rangers fell to 7-17 overall, 3-10 in the conference.
The Gophers jumped out to an eight point lead, 10-2, with 14:41 after Yambor drilled three 3-pointers in a row. Yambor then dished to junior Micah Perry, who was waiting behind the arc and dropped another three for Goucher.
Ranger's offensive standout, Mike Mayes, responded with a jumper and sophomore, Terrell Brown followed with another field goal to bring the Rangers within six, 13-6, at the 13:00 minute mark.
The Rangers couldn't get the offense moving, they finished the half with just 12 points, down 23-12 to the Gophers.
Goucher's senior forward, Pat Bailey closed the half with a three off a Dorian Green assist to close the half for the Gophers.
Drew attempted to turn things around and waste much time in the second half, as they scored a quick nine points in the first 6:00. They held the Goucher offense to just six points in this time span to keep the score close, 21-29.
Freshman forward, Lucas Levenson, forced a turnover from Goucher's, Jeff Whitaker at 13:07, which was followed by fast break dunk from Ranger sophomore, Terrell Brown. Brown scored Drew's next two off an assist from Levenson to bring the score to 25-29. Senior, Joe Horvath drained a three from way behind the arc to make the Goucher advantage just one point, 29-28, at 11:11. Drew's Kyle Joyce hit both free throws to give the Rangers their first and only lead in the game, 30-29, after being fouled by Goucher's Kyle Gladden.
The Rangers got close again at the 4:30 mark, 37-35, after a Mayes made two free throws. Goucher answered quickly with a two more 3-pointers from Yambor. Twelve of Yambor's 15 came off of three-point shots. Sophomore forward, Steve Musegna followed Yambor with 12 and Perry finished with 11.
After a cold start shooting, Drew's Kyle Joyce finished with a team-high 17. Fifteen of Joyce's points came in the second half where he hit two back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 00:30 to keep the Rangers alive in the long final minutes. Mayes finished with 14 points, three assists, Levenson had two points and three blocks for the Rangers. Brown turned in nine points and team-high, seven rebounds.
The Gophers take on the Moravian Greyhounds, Tuesday, Feb 16th at 7:00pm and hope to keep their Landmark Conference playoff hopes alive.
