SCRANTON, Pa. (March 27, 2010) – Sam Nepveux (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) netted the game-winning goal with just :20 seconds remaining to give Drew (4-2, 1-0 Landmark) its first Landmark Conference win of the 2010 season. Scranton (2-5, 0-1 Landmark) clawed its way back into the game in the fourth quarter but could not close the book on the Rangers.
After trailing the entire game the Royals put together four fourth-period goals to grab a 5-4 lead with 7:52 remaining in the game. The Rangers would not waver as they tightened up their defense and caused five turnovers in the final four minutes. With the Rangers trailing for the first time, it was up to the offense to regain the lead.
With 1:40 remaining in the game, junior Ari Young (Sparta, N.J/Sparta), connected with Mike Sayers (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) for his second goal of the afternoon, knotting the game at five. With the momentum back in favor of Drew, the stage would be set for Nepveaux. After a big save by keeper Charlie DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia), the Rangers were able to clear the ball and enable Nepveaux to get the shot on goal.
Freshman Scott Humphreys (Wilmington, Del./Sanford School) scored two first-half goals to raise his season total to seven. Drew Goaltenders faced 21 shots on goal and turned back 16 of them.
The Rangers return home on Wednesday and play host to Montclair State in a non-conference tilt. The game will be played under the lights in Ranger Stadium at 7:00.
