Greg Reading scored five goals in an 11-10 win over the Manhanttanville Valiants Thursday night in Purchase, NY.
The Rangers held on after giving up a six-goal advantage to start their season 1-0.
Despite a four-goal performance from junior Greg Strauss, the Valiants fell to 1-0.
Reading scored his first three goals in the first period helping the Rangers to a 6-1 advantage. The Rangers picked up where they left off in the second with another goal from Reading and sophomore Nick Della Fera scored his second goal of the match. The Valiants responded with two goals, one from Billy Motherway, the second from Andrew McMillin.
Strauss found the back of the net for the only scoring action in the third period to cut the Rangers' lead to 8-4.
Strauss picked up where he left off in the fourth and scored the period's first goal just under thirty second in. Manhattanville would put an own goal in to give the Rangers a 9-5 advantage but the Valiants battled back and scored the next three goals to bring the score to 9-8.
Drew sophomore, Sean McGowan, put the Rangers up by two with a goal just after the eight-minute mark off a Jon Bucknam assist. Manhattanville's Matt Corey turned in his only goal of the night to tie the match at 10-all with 4:45 remaining. The remainder of regulation time finished relatively quiet with two saves from Drew keeper, Charlie DeSoscio. Bucknam ripped a shot with twelve seconds on the clock but was denied by Manhattanville keeper Andrew Predun.
Predun came up big again for the Valiants in the extra time with a save but turned the ball over to Drew junior Ari Young, who converted a pass to Reading who scored the game winner.
For the Valiants, Strauss' four paced the offense while Corey finished with one goal and three assists. Predun took the loss with 15 saves.
Reading converted 5-8 shots on goal and picked up six ground balls for the Rangers followed by Della Fera who had two goals. Bucknam finished with two assits. Brad Mendelson and Charlie DeSocio split time in the net for Drew recording seven and 13 saves respectively.
The Rangers travel to California this weekend and take on Whittier, Monday March 8.
