Rangers Drop Conference Thriller, 8-7

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (April 24, 2010) -The Drew Rangers Men's Lacrosse team dropped a tough Landmark Conference matchup on the road to the Susquehanna Crusaders 8-7. A hat-trick from junior attackman, Ari Young (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) wasn't enough to hold off the Crusaders, who scored three goals in the final period to improve their record to 7-7, 2-3 in conference. The loss dropped the Rangers record to 8-5 overall and marked their first Landmark defeat of the year putting their conference record at 4-1.

Senior Greg Reading (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) kicked off the first period with his 27th of the year less than a minute into the game.

The Crusaders answered with three straight scores to go up 3-1 with 8:47 left to play. Young netted his first of the day with 3:53 left to close the gap.

The Rangers and Crusaders traded scores in the second period, Sean Ledwick scored his first of the day and senior attack Jon Bucknam (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) ripped his 19th of the season with nine ticks left on the clock.

The Rangers went into the halftime down just one at 4-3 and Reading quickly tied the game in the third period with his second of the day with just over a minute expired. It was the second time Reading scored after sophomore face-off specialist Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./St. Joseph's Metuchen) won the period's opening duel.

Young would score his second of the day after a successful clear to close out the third period, and tie the game at 5-5.

Senior attackman Mike Sayers (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) gave the Rangers their first lead of the game early in the fourth period. McGowan won another face-off, Reading fought his way though traffic for the ground ball and dished to Sayers who has been on fire for the Rangers. Sayers currently has a six-game scoring streak.

The Crusaders proceeded to go on a devastating 3-0 run capped by Ledwicks second of the game, with 4:17 left on the clock. The Crusaders defense held off the Rangers until Young broke the silence with his third goal of the day, just over 2:00 remaining in the game.

The Rangers took a time-out with :42 seconds remaining and got an extra-man opportunity after Susquehanna's Tim Pastore was called a 30-second pushing violation. Bucknam threatened with 00:03 on the clock but the Crusaders' keeper Will Torrence came up with the big save to ensure the victory.

First-year keeper Charles DeSocio (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) matched Torrence with 17 saves in the net for the Rangers, but took the loss. The Rangers and Crusaders were also even in ground ball pick-ups, both squads recorded 30.

The Rangers take on Goucher next Saturday May 1, 2010 in their last regular season game of the year at home in Ranger Stadium.Drew  be honoring Jon Bucknam, Peter Brown, Brad Mendelson, Taylor Lohman, Jim Felix, Greg Reading, Mike Sayers, Steve Carnes, Bobby Wilson and Dan Fitzgerald in senior day ceremonies.
