Fredericksburg, Va. (May 12, 2010)- The Drew University women's lacrosse season came to a close Wednesday afternoon as they fell 18-8 to the University of Mary Washington in the opening round of the NCAA Championship Tournament. The Rangers finished their season 10-9, after making their third consecutive trip to the Landmark Conference final game and the NCAA Tournament three out of the four last years.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-1 lead in behind All-American midfielder Allie Kimmelman who dished out five assists in the run.
Junior attack
Stacie Brown (Upper Marlboro, Md./Calverton School) got the Rangers on the board with a free possession goal in the middle of the Eagles offensive outburst.
The Rangers finally got things going with 11:47 remaining in the period. Sophomore midfielder
Patrick Rock (Pennington, N.J./Pennington School) split defenders and challenged freshman goalie Kathryn Stiltz for the first time all afternoon. Rossi won the battle and began what would be a 5-1 Ranger run.
Brittany Butler and Lauren Callison both scored for the Eagles as time expired in the first period giving Mary Washington a 13-6 halftime lead.
The spark seemed to have carried over into the second period for the Rangers when
Lyndsay Fry (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Morristown Beard) ran in her first goal of the game off the draw control but the Eagles defense locked in.
The Eagles defense shutout the Rangers for the remainder of the period, allowing just one more goal to Fry.
While the defense dominated, the Eagles offense kept pouring on the goals. Butler scored twice more in the second period capping off a 5-0 run. Butler lead the Eagles with six goals while Kimmelman scored twice and had seven points on the afternoon.
Mary Washington outshot the Rangers 33-25 and converted 4-6 free position shots while their defense caused 14 turnovers to the Rangers six. Sophomore midfielder Ellen Bikowski picked up nine groundballs for the Eagles and caused four Ranger turnovers.
Fry and Rossi both had two goals, Rossi added two assists to finish with four points.
Junior
Allison McCord (Southampton, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) picked up five groundballs for the Rangers' defense. In the net for the Rangers,
Rachel Hanley (Randolph, Md./Randolph) made six saves but took the loss falling to 10-9 on season.
The Eagles will travel to Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster Pennsylvania for the NCAA sweet sixteen this weekend.
