Kings of the Court, Rangers 3-Peat
MADISON, N.J. (May 9, 2010) - The Drew Men's Tennis team took home its 10th consecutive conference title and third-straight in the Landmark Conference after defeating Scranton, 5-3 this afternoon. The Rangers are a perfect 28-0 against Landmark opponents and run their conference winning streak to 83 straight matches.
Matt Imbo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) came back and won the final two sets at number five singles to clinch the ninth-straight victory of the season for the Rangers. Imbo fell, 6-1 to Jon Russo of Scranton but prevailed in a tiebreaker in the second set and took the final set of the day, 6-2 to send Drew (12-6) to the NCAA Tournament. It would mark the second time in as many matches against each other that the pair would go to a third set.
The Rangers opened up the day with a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Alex Belflore (Knowles Grove, England/TASIS) and
Matt Brisotti (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) registered a win at number two doubles while Imbo and
Victor Kolarov (Sofia, Bulgaria/FPELS William Shakespeare) cruised to an 8-2 win at number three doubles to help put Drew on top going into singles play.
Scranton (15-6) would begin to mount a comeback beginning at number one doubles. Scott Melideo and Joe Morra took
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and
Elliot Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) to a tiebreaker and prevailed with a 9-8 victory effectively ending the pair's nine-game winning streak.
The Royals tied the score up at two when Morra won at number four singles 7-6, 6-0.
Raul Smego would help re-capture the lead when he took down Melideo at number one singles for his fifth-straight win. Scranton would tie it for the last time at three when Tim McGurrin won 6-4, 7-6 won at number three singles.
The Rangers rallied and took the final two matches with Kolarov pulling out a 7-6, 6-4 victory at number six singles, setting the stage for Imbo's come from behind victory.
