SCRANTON, Pa. (October 31, 2011) – After two postponements and road trip to the University of Scranton, #12 Catholic (14-1, 6-0 Landmark) emerged victorious with a 5-0 win over Drew (11-8, 4-2 Landmark) this afternoon. With the loss the Rangers will be the second seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs.
After 20 minutes of scoreless action the Cardinals finally broke the tie with the first of two Colleen Harwood goals of the afternoon. Before the halftime horn, Rebecca Lukaszcyk scored two goals in a little over a minute increasing the Catholic lead to 3-0.
The Catholic defense was stifling, holding the Rangers to just one shot. Cardinal goalkeeper Megan Comunale went untested in 70 minutes of play for her ninth win of the year. The matchup featured two of the country's best at drawing corners. Coming into the game the Cardinals ranked 2
nd in the nation with 15.33 corners per game and were awarded 11 in the contest compared to just two by Drew who ranked 14
th in the country with 12.17.
The Cardinals added two second half goals to lock up the first seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference postseason. Both teams will await the winner of Scranton and Juniata to determine their opponent on Wednesday.
A time for Wednesday's semifinal match has yet to be determined as the Drew Athletic Department awaits word from the city of Madison on when the power will return to campus after the recent snow storm.
