MADISON, N.J. (October 6, 2011) – Fairleigh Dickinson (6-7) scored the final two goals tonight to defeat the Rangers, 2-1 in the Battle of Madison Avenue. The loss is only the fourth in the last 15 tries against the Devils as the Rangers drop to 7-5 on the year.
The Rangers took the lead early on the game on the seventh goal of the year by
Angela Terracciano (Keansburg, N.J./Raritan). She is tied for the team lead in goals with
Meghan Howlett (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) who assisted on the lone Ranger goal.
The Devils caught a break in the final seconds of the first half when they drew a penalty corner as time expired. The untimed play produced two shots for the Devils, one that was stopped by
Sarah Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) for a defensive save and the second found the back of the cage off the stick of Devils forward Lauren Guenther.
Feeding off the momentum created by the game-tying goal at the end of the half, the Devils wasted little time to get the second goal of the night. A little over three minutes into final period of play, sophomore Lanie Andrews found senior Megan Springmeyer for the eventual game-winner.
Despite out-shooting the Devils 6-4 in the final frame and holding a 6-2 advantage in penalty corners, the Rangers would not be able to to get past the Devil defense. The Rangers are 23-13-4 all-time against their cross-street rivals in a series that dates back to 1967.
The Rangers will be on the road again on Sunday as they travel down to Goucher for a Landmark Conference match. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Beldon Field in Towson, Md.
