Rangers March into First Landmark Championship Game

Box Score
UNION, N.J. (November 2, 2011) – The Drew (12-8) field hockey team shook the 2011 overtime bug at the perfect time with a 2-1 win in extra time over Scranton (12-6) this evening. Senior Mary Esposito (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored two goals, including the game-winner, sending the Rangers to their first Landmark Championship game.

The Rangers who have been through a whirlwind of scheduling woes in the past week caused by Saturday's snow storm, overcame the adversity and stamped their mark in Ranger field hockey record books. The on-field adversity began with a Royal goal, 28 minutes into the contest by Laura Megargel. The sophomore received a slick pass from Kaela Mahon on the right side which Megargel redirected into the cage, making the score 1-0.

Drew re-captured the game's momentum and set the tone for the rest of the night when they tied the game with just 1:16 left in the first half. Esposito took a shot from the left side that came right back to her stick and she would not be denied on the rebound to tie the score at one.

The Ranger defense held strong in front of goalkeeper Christiana Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) who made all five of her saves in the first half of play. Scranton got only one shot off in the final 38:42 compared to eight by the Ranger offense. No shot was more important than the final one. Freshman Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) dribbled in towards the cage and found Esposito who was waiting to put home the game-winner.

The Rangers will travel to Catholic University in a rematch of Monday's regular season finale. Prior to tonight's game the Rangers had been 0-4 in overtime this season. The Cardinals escaped also with an overtime victory tonight with a 2-1 win over defending champion Juniata. A time has yet to be announced, check www.drewrangers.com for the latest news and updates.
