Catholic Wins First Field Hockey Title

Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 5, 2011) – Catholic (16-1) captured its first conference championship in school history with a 5-1 victory over Drew (12-9) earlier this evening. Cardinal forward Mary Swarthout scored twice in the second win in three games over the Rangers.

Three first half goals would bury the Rangers on Saturday night just as it did in the season finale. The Cardinals opened up the scoring in the seventh minute with an unassisted goal by Colleen Harwood. Two quick goals by Mary Swarthout and Tracey Scanlon within a three minute span gave the Cardinals a commanding 3-0 lead going into the break.

The Cardinal offense did not skip a beat in the final 35 minutes scoring two more goals in four minutes including Swarthout's second goal of the game. The Cardinals owned a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. The Cardinals held the Rangers to a season-low two penalty corners for the second time this season.

The lone Ranger goal came in the 57th minute when Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) tallied her fifth goal of the year.

The Rangers will await a potential ECAC berth and try to match their run from last season where they made it to the championship game.
