Big Second Half Leads to Ranger Shutout

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 3, 2012) – The Drew University field hockey team improved to 8-2 on the year with  a 4-0 shutout of Ramapo College (3-5) this evening at Ranger Stadium. Junior goalkeeper Christiana Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) recorded her third shutout of the season in the win.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie despite the Rangers holding a 14-1 shot advantage while drawing  a total of 10 penalty corners over the first 35 minutes of play.

Just 1:24 into the second half Sarah Charles (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) scored her Landmark Conference-leading 11th goal of the year to put the Rangers up 1-0. A little over two minutes later the Roadrunners were called for a foul in the circle in which the Rangers were awarded a penalty stroke.  Head Coach Felicia Cappabianca called upon junior Jess Johnson (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Senior) who converted her second stroke of the season to give Drew a two-score lead.

Junior Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton), who assisted on the Rangers first goal, tacked on a pair of goals in the final 27 minutes for her first two-goal game of her Drew career. In the 53rd minute, freshman Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) slipped a pass off an Alexandria De Sousa (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern) shot over to Waleko for the third goal of the game. De Sousa registered her first point of the season in the 67th minute setting up Waleko for her third goal of the year.

Carlini improves to 8-2 on the year and made six stops in the cage for the Rangers. Her counterpart, Rebecca Elliot also made six saves in a losing effort.

Drew outshot Ramapo 22-12 for the game and owned a 20-7 advantage on penalty corners.

The Rangers will be home again on Saturday to take on Goucher College in Ranger Stadium. The Landmark Conference matchup is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
