OT Goal Sends Rangers to Landmark Championship Game

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 3, 2012) – For the second-straight year, the Drew field hockey team will compete for the Landmark Conference Championship thanks to an overtime goal by junior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.). The junior scored the last two goals in a 2-1 victory over the University of Scranton this afternoon in the nation's capital.

The Rangers will play the winner of #6 Catholic and Susquehanna tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium on the campus of Catholic University.

The Royals took the initial lead just 6:50 into the game on a goal by Jessica Conroy. Drew finally responded with 1:13 left in the first half when Gagliano scored her first goal of the contest off a pass by Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) to tie the game at one.

The two teams played a scoreless final 35 minutes of regulation to force overtime for the second straight year. In the 74th minute, sophomore Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) fed Gagliano off the only penalty corner of the extra frame for the game-winning score. The goal sends the Rangers to the conference championship game for the second-straight year.

In the 2011 Landmark Conference semifinal, the Rangers topped the Royals in similar fashion on an overtime goal to advance to their first ever Landmark Conference Championship.

Drew fired a total of 10 shots on goal compared to just three by the Royals. Scranton goalkeeper Krista Mundy made a game-high eight saves including six in the second half to keep the Rangers off the scoreboard.
