Cardinals Top Rangers, Repeat as Landmark Champions

Gagliano scored her third goal in the past two games in a losing effort.
Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (November 4, 2012) – The Catholic University Cardinals (12-7) won their second-straight Landmark Conference Championship after holding on to a 3-2 victory over Drew (12-7) this afternoon in the nation's capital.

The game was a rematch of the 2011 Landmark Conference Championship in which the Cardinals prevailed in a 5-1 victory. The win gives the Cardinals an automatic bid into the Division III NCAA Tournament later this week.

The Cardinals wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, striking just 4:07 into the contest on a goal by Haley Wright. The Rangers knotted the game at one in the 22nd minute on the second goal of the season by freshman Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional). The very evenly played first half ended in a 1-1 tie with each team firing nine shots.

Catholic opened up the second half with two goals in the first four minutes holding its largest lead of the game. Drew was able to pull within a goal in the 49th minute after the Rangers were awarded a penalty stroke. Head Coach Felicia Cappabianca elected junior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) to take the free hit and she converted it for her third goal in the past two games.

The Ranger defense held strong over the last 20 minutes of play as the Cardinals attempted 10 penalty corners compared to just two by the Rangers. With the Cardinals holding possession for much of the second half, the Rangers were only able to get four shots on goal, all coming in the first 14 minutes of the second half.

Drew goalkeeper CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Cardinal netminder Megan Communale each made 10 saves in 70 minutes of work.

The Rangers will await a potential ECAC Tournament bid which will be announced early this week.
