MADISON, N.J. (February 10, 2012) – After coming up short in the closing seconds against Goucher last Saturday, Drew (6-17, 4-8 Landmark) edged Moravian (12-11, 7-5 Landmark), 75-73 as time expired on a layup by
Terrell Brown (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson). Senior
Asmar Capers (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with a team-high 23 points pacing the Ranger offense.
A wildly exciting finish in Baldwin Gym saw the Greyhounds erase a five point deficit in the final minute of play. With just three seconds left on the clock, junior Garret Johnson completed the comeback by hitting a 3-pointer to tie the game at 73. Wasting no time, guard
Steve Hydzik (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) received the outlet pass and delivered a strike down court to Brown who caught it in stride for an easy transition layup. In a game that looked like it was certain to see extra time, Hydzik caught everyone on the floor off guard with the exception of Brown who was wide open on the other end of the floor.
Johnson was the go-to guy down the stretch for Moravian, scoring eight of his 18 points in the final 2:36 of the game. Senior Jeff Cullinan had a career-night for the Greyhounds, leading all scorers with 28 points, including a 10-11 effort from the free throw line.
After trailing by six in the early going of the second half the Rangers put together a 15-5 run beginning at the 17:54 mark, taking the lead for good. Prior to the run, the lead had changed hands five times with the score tying on four different occasions.
Sophomore
John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) continued his success against Moravian, dumping in 13 points and hitting a team high, three 3-pointers. Hydzik was also a force on the offensive end eclipsing a new career high of 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Rangers will be back on the floor tomorrow when they welcome in Landmark Conference foe, Scranton. The game will be the second game of a conference doubleheader, slated for 4:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym.
