MADISON, N.J. (February 11, 2012) – For the second-straight night the Rangers pulled off another win in the finals seconds, this time against Scranton, 76-75 in Baldwin Gym. Senior
Asmar Capers (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) hit the go-ahead basket with three seconds remaining to ice the Rangers fifth conference win of the season.
Scranton (17-7, 10-3 Landmark) chipped away at a six-point Ranger advantage with 3:36 remaining and took their first lead of the ball game with 51 ticks left . Senior Luke Hawk gave the Royals a 72-71 lead on a layup to close a 10-4 run by the visitors. On the ensuing possession sophomore
John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) was fouled on a 3-pointer giving the Rangers the opportunity to regain the lead.
Ford calmly, sank all three free throws giving the Rangers a 74-72 advantage with 32 seconds left in the game. Scranton's Tommy Morgan came right back down the floor and captured all the momentum with an old-fashioned 3-point play with 24 seconds on the clock. Morgan scored a team-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting to pace the Royal offense.
The 3-point play Scranton a 74-73 lead with 24 seconds left in the game. Capers finished with a game-high 34 points but none more important than his last two. The senior guard received the ball at the top of the key with time winding down and skied over three defenders at the rim to put the Rangers on top for good. A last ditch heave from the Royals came up short, allowing the Rangers to improve to 7-17 on the year and 5-8 in the Landmark Conference.
Last night's hero,
Terrell Brown (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson), played 34 minutes and pulled down game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Brown contributed eight points on the offensive end on 3-of- 6 effort from the floor.
The Rangers will close out their season next Saturday against Merchant Marine and honor their three senior prior to the 4:00 p.m. contest.
