MADISON, N.J. (February 18, 2012) – Merchant Marine (12-13, 7-7 Landmark) took control of the game from the start, defeating the Rangers 96-74 on Senior Day in Baldwin Gym. The Rangers conclude their 2011-12 season with a 7-18 record overall and finish 5-9 in Landmark play.
Despite four players scoring 10 or more points, the Mariner duo of Reed Buck and Nick Sergio proved to be too much as Merchant Marine completed the season sweep. Buck was lights out, tallying a game-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting. He connected on five of his seven 3-pointers he attempted. Sergio nearly equaled him, finishing with 23 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Senior
Asmar Capers (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished his Ranger career with 26 points, including a 7-for-7 effort from the free throw line.
Terrell Brown (Camden, N.J./Woodrow Wilson) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and recorded his 15
th career double-double by adding 15 points. He ranks fourth all-time in Drew history in double-doubles and finishes his Ranger career ranked sixth all-time with 546 rebounds in just three seasons of work.
Forward
Dara Mc Keon (Dunboyne, Ireland/St. Peter's College) capped his Ranger career with a 17-point effort, knocking down three of his seven 3-pointers he attempted. Senior
Joe Mitchell (Robinsville, N.J./Lawrence) saw a season-high 19 minutes of action where he dished off two assists and registered a steal.
The Mariners took a 46-37 lead into halftime and continued a 9-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half. The Rangers brought the Merchant Marine lead below double digits, only three times in the final 20 minutes of play. Buck nailed a jumper with four minutes to play, sparking a 10-0 run over the next three minutes, ending all chances at a Ranger comeback.
Merchant Marine forced 17 Ranger turnovers and owned a 41-30 advantage on the glass. The season sweep is the first since the 2009-10 season.
