Box Score MADISON, N.J. (September 11, 2012) – The Drew field hockey team improved to 4-0 this evening with a 3-1 victory over Union College (1-2) at Ranger Stadium. The 4-0 start is the best start to a season since 1998 in which the Rangers won their first five games of the year.
The Rangers jumped out to an early lead in the contest on a goal from
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.). The junior blasted home her third goal of 2012 off a perfectly placed pass by
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) just four minutes into the game.
The Dutchwomen responded less than four minutes later on unassisted goal by Nicole Merigliano. The forward came up with a loose ball in front of the cage and slipped it into the right side of the goal to notch the game at one.
Junior
Sarah Charles (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) continued her hot start and recorded the eventual game-winner in the 24
th minute of the game. Freshman
Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) sent her conference-leading fourth assist in the direction of Charles who beat the Union keeper to the right side of the cage. Charles has a conference-high six goals on the season and is also tops in the league with 12 points.
For the majority of the second half the Rangers had the ball in their offensive zone as evidenced in the 13-6 shot advantage in the final 35 minutes. The steady goalkeeping of
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) kept the Dutchwomen of the board in the second half as she made eight stops for her fourth win.
Prior to the game, both teams participated in a moment of silence as the flag flew at half-staff in remembrance of the victims of the 9/11 attacks. The Drew Athletic Department donated all of tonight's admission revenue to The National September 11 Memorial Museum and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also collected separate donations.
The Drew field hockey team will go on the road for the first time this season on Thursday to take on previously ranked Lebanon Valley College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Annville, Pa.
