MADISON, N.J. (September 24, 2012) – In the final dual match of the fall season the Drew men's tennis team (2-0) recorded a 9-0 shutout over cross-street rival Fairleigh Dickinson (1-1) this afternoon.
The Rangers swept doubles play only dropping two games. Senior
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and
Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) teamed up at number one doubles for a 8-0, shutout victory. The match was Smego's 43
rd doubles win, moving him into a tie for 10
th place all-time in career doubles wins.
Singles play saw more Ranger dominance, where they did not lose a set. Smego improved his singles record in the fall to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mitch Gettis. The freshman, Lathrop, pulled out a 6-1, 6-2 win at number two singles over Ryan Kearns.
Seniors
Adam Gerber (Montclair, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and
Matt Imbo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) improved to 2-0 on the season with straight set victories at the number three and four positions respectively.
Ryan Johnson (Hingham, Mass./Hingham) and
Vin Mahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) completed the Drew shutout with victories at the number five and six slots.
The Rangers will conclude their fall schedule this weekend when they compete in ITA Regionals at Ithaca College beginning on Friday.
