Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa. (September 29, 2012) – The Drew University field hockey team improved to 7-2 and 2-0 in the Landmark Conference play with a 3-2 overtime victory over Moravian College (3-4, 0-2 Landmark) this afternoon.
With 9:02 remaining in regulation, the Greyhounds knotted the game up at two on a goal by Kelly O'Connell to close out a two-goal second half for Moravian. The second half ended with both teams firing 13 shots a piece. Drew goalkeeper
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) and Moravian netminder Catherine Gottlieb each made six stops after 70 minutes of play.
The Rangers fired two shots in the extra frame with none becoming more important the final shot of the game off the stick of
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton). The sophomore midfielder received a pass from
Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) and was able to sneak it past Gottlieb for the game-winning goal. The score was the first of the season for Waleko.
Sophomore
Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J/Freehold Twp.) provided the offensive firepower for the Rangers in regulation with a pair of scores. Off a pass from freshman
Bea Cannavale (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional), Gagliano kicked off the scoring with just 52 second left in the first half. After Moravian tied the game at one, Gagliano put the Rangers in front once again in the 58
th minute off the first of two assists from Boyd.
The Rangers have been victorious in each of the five meetings against the Greyhounds since entering the Landmark Conference in 2007. The overtime contest was the first for both teams in 2012.
Drew will be back in Ranger Stadium on Wednesday as part as doubleheader with men's soccer against Ramapo. Field hockey will play first at 4:30 p.m. followed by men's soccer at 7:00 p.m.
