Barcia Scores Four Times in Rout of Muhlenberg

Box Score MADISON, N.J. (October 30, 2013) – In the final non-conference match of the season, the Drew University field hockey team defeated Muhlenberg (8-8) by the score of 6-1 this evening at Ranger Stadium. Sophomore Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) scored four times and upping her season total to 25 on the year.

The win improves the Rangers to 15-2 on the season. The win marks the second time in four seasons the Rangers have reached the 15-win plateau. The Rangers have won 11 or more games in six of the seven seasons under Head Coach Felicia Cappabianca.

Barcia found the back of the cage four times for the second time this season. Her 25 goals this fall are tied for the second most ever by a Drew field hockey player. She trails only Lorraine Maloney C'89 who scored 27 in 1986. Sophomore Taryn Murphy (Wilton, Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School) helped the Rangers pull away in the second half, scoring twice.

Despite getting outshot and outcornered in the first half the Rangers were able to capitalize on their opportunities. Barcia came up with a turnover in the circle in the eighth minute and fired a shot to the lower right corner, putting the Rangers up, 1-0.

The Rangers made it 2-0 after being rewarded their only corner of the first half. After a breakdown of their initial play, Melissa Boyd (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) was able to slide a pass over to Barcia who converted her second goal of the night. Muhlenberg went into the half with a 7-5 advantage in shots and 4-1 edge in corners.

Drew took control of the game in the second half, scoring four times. Murphy started the second half onslaught with her third goal of the season in the 53rd minute. After another Ranger corner, Barcia was able to get a shot off that hit the left post but Murphy caromed right to the stick of Murphy for her third goal of the season.

The Mules ended all notions of a shutout with 3:03 remaining in the game on a goal by Rachel Strow. The Rangers responded with two more goals in the final 1:59, the second by Murphy and the final goal by Barcia with 49 seconds left. Senior Brooke Gagliano (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Twp.) was credited with two assists in the second half and is second in the Landmark Conference with 39 points this season.

Senior CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) got the start in cage for the Rangers and made four saves in the first half. Sophomore Sarah Stewart (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) played the final 35 minutes and made three saves, preserving the victory.

The Rangers avenged a 2-1 overtime loss back in 2011 with today's victory. The Rangers are now 17-13-1 all-time against the Mules in a series that dates back to 1979.

Drew will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday when they host Juniata in a crucial Landmark Conference game. The Rangers need a victory to lock up the #1 seed in the upcoming conference playoffs. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Ranger Stadium.
