Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (October 9, 2013) – The nationally ranked Drew University field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season this afternoon, dropping a 2-1 decision in overtime to King's College (6-5). The heartbreaking defeat drops the Rangers to 10-1 on the season.
Just three minutes into the overtime period, sophomore Alexandra Bolinski found herself open on a breakaway and beat a charging
CC Carlini (Amherst, N.H./Bishop Guertin) for the game-winning goal. Senior Kim Howanitz was credited with her third assist of the season.
Despite a relentless attack by the Rangers in the first half of play, the Monarchs were able to take a 1-0 lead into halftime Drew was awarded 10 penalty corners in the first 35 minutes, compared to just one by King's. Senior Abby McManus scored an unassisted goal in the 17
th minute to give the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage.
The Rangers knotted the game up at one just 3:31 into the second half on a goal by sophomore
Sam Barcia (Berlin, N.J./Eastern). Sophomore
Amanda Hearney (Shoreham Wading-River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) dished out her third assist of the fall. The score was Barcia's Landmark Conference leading 17
th of the season.
The Drew offense completely dominated the second half, outshooting the Monarchs, 13-1. For the game the Rangers had a 23-10 advantage in shots and a 22-5 edge in penalty corners. King's goalkeeper, Megan Withrow, was busy and made a game-high 14 saves. Carlini played all 73:01 in the cage for Drew, making five saves.
Coming into the contest the Rangers were one of five unbeaten teams in the entire country. King's has taken four of the last five meetings from Drew dating back to 2004.
The Rangers will return home on Saturday when they welcome Landmark Conference-foe, Moravian to Ranger Stadium. Drew has won all six matchups against the Greyhounds since entering the Landmark Conference in 2007, including a 3-2 overtime victory last season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
