MADISON, N.J. (April 10, 2013) – The Drew University men's tennis team recorded its third shutout of the 2012-13 season with a 9-0 blanking of Merchant Marine (1-7, 0-5 Landmark) this afternoon. The Rangers improve to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the Landmark Conference.
The Rangers win their 39
th-straight regular season match in the Landmark Conference and extend their unbeaten streak against conference opponents to 109.
The match was delayed after 10 minutes of doubles play and moved indoors to the Simon Forum due to rain. The weather did not affect the Rangers doubles play as they surrendered only three games in the three matches.
Seniors
Djedjy Hill (Haiti/Rancocas Valley) and
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) improved to 4-0 after winning number one doubles, 8-1 over Jeremy Guettlein and Josh Levitas.
Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) and
Adam Clark (Fremont, Calif./John F. Kennedy) cruised to a 8-0 win at number two doubles.
Tommy Butschi (Tyler, Texas/New Braunfels) and
Vin Mahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) gave the Rangers a 3-0 lead going into singles play by defeating Phillip Creswell III and James Karas, 8-2.
The Rangers won all six singles matches in straight sets. Smego, Hill and
Derek McMullen (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) did not lose a game winning at first, third and six singles respectively.
Drew will look to clinch a playoff berth this weekend when they travel south to take on Catholic. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. in the nation's capital.
