MADISON, N.J. (April 23, 2013) – For the sixth-straight season, the Drew University men's tennis team (10-6) will play for the Landmark Conference Championship after a 5-2 semifinal victory over Catholic University (12-7) this afternoon.
The two teams had the regular season bout come down to the final match as the Rangers edged the Cardinals, 5-4 back on April 13
th. Like the match in mid-April, freshman
Adam Clark (Fremont, Calif./John F. Kennedy) was the deciding point. With the Rangers leading 4-2, Clark clinched the match in dramatic fashion, defeating his opponent in two-straight tiebreaking sets (7-6, 7-6).
The Rangers began the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior
Raul Smego (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristo Rey) and
Djedjy Hill (Haiti/Rancocas Valley) cruised to an 8-2 victory at first doubles. The doubles win for Smego was his school record, 21
st of the season.
Freshman
Hunter Lathrop (South Londonderry, Vt./Stratton Mountain School) and Matt Imbo (Islip, N.Y./Islip) followed suit at second doubles, emerging with a 8-3 victory. A loss at third doubles put the Rangers up 2-1 after doubles play.
Lathrop made quick work of Cassian Utrie at second doubles, winning 6-1, 6-1. The Cardinals narrowed the gap after Jason Quisberth defeated
Vin Mahon (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), 6-1, 6-1 at sixth singles.
Smego got the Rangers within a point of clinching the match, recording a 6-3, 6-4 win at first singles over Brian Bradley. The win was his 60
th singles win of his career and gave the Rangers a 4-2 advantage.
The Rangers will take on The University of Scranton on Saturday with a match time to be announced. The Royals defeated Juniata, 5-0 in the other semifinal.
