Huelbig's Career-High Not Enough, Royals Outlast Rangers

Box Score Madison, N.J. (January 22, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball team (8-8, 2-3) suffered its third conference loss of the season to the University of Scranton Royals, 82-72 this evening in Baldwin Gym. Now 2-3 in conference play, the Rangers sit in fifth place in the Landmark.

Sophomore guard Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) was one of two Rangers scoring in double figures. Huelbig scored a career-high 23 points including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free  throw line. The second year guard added five rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes of play. Sophomore Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory School) continued his hot start to the season scoring a game-high 26 points in his 37 minutes of action. Klinger has now scored 15 points or more in 10 straight games.

Scranton started the game on a 12-4 run before the Ranger shooters came to life. Drew would answer the Royals run with a 13-5 run of their own over the next four minutes tying the game 17-17 with 12 minutes left to play in the first half. Huelbig scored seven of the Rangers 13 points on their run. The teams combined for four ties and five lead changes in the first half. Scranton closed the half outscoring the Rangers 25-18, taking a 42-35 lead into the half.

Drew outscored Scranton 15-7 in the first six minutes of the second half taking their only lead of the game 50-49 with 14 minutes left to play. Klinger scored seven of the Rangers 15 points to start the half. Just eight seconds after Drew claimed their first lead of the game Scranton answered with a lay-up from Tommy Morgan taking a lead that they would not relinquish. Scranton closed the game outscoring the Rangers 32-23, for a 82-72 victory.

Scranton was led by senior guard Tommy Morgan who scored 23 points and added nine rebounds. Landmark Conference leading scorer Ross Danzig added 21 points in the Scranton win.

Sophomore forward Ozan Yucetepe (Bursa, Turkey/Westfield (N.J.) played 17 minutes off the bench for the Rangers scoring seven points and grabbing three rebounds.

Drew continues conference play on Saturday January 25 in the first game of a Men's and Women's double-header in Baldwin Gym against Goucher College at 2:00 p.m.
