Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 11, 2014) — The Drew University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to defending Landmark Conference champions No. 12 The Catholic University of America on an overcast and chilly Saturday afternoon.
 
Catholic (10-1, 3-0 Landmark), notorious for its prolific scoring offence, was active early but the Ranger (1-10, 0-3) defense held strong in the first half while keeping the Cardinals at bay. Within six minutes from the opening whistle, Catholic was averaging a shot per minute. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Stewart kept the Cardinals off the board with three saves during that barrage of shots. In the 21^st minute senior midfielder Melissa Boyd registered her third defensive save of the season, and then again in the 22^nd minute she picked up her second defensive save of the game and her fourth of the season.
 
With no time left in the first half, the Cardinals had a penalty corner they needed to play out before halftime. Catholic was able to take advantage and slip a ball past Stewart and head into the midway mark 1-0.
 
Entering the second half the Cardinals continued to pressure the Ranger defense, but in the 41^st minute Drew counterattacked and a Catholic defensive save staved off Boyd's scoring opportunity.
 
In the 61^st minute the Cardinals put in an insurance goal and extended their lead 2-0. Six minutes later Catholic was awarded a penalty stroke and converted to push the lead 3-0.
 
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference action on Wednesday, Oct. 15 when they take on The University of Scranton Royals at Ranger Stadium with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
