Box Score WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Nov. 25, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the season at King's (Pa.) College, 74-59, on Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
Junior forward
Jason Huelbig led the Rangers (3-2) with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting, but Drew's unseasonably low shooting percentages from the floor, beyond the arc, and the free throw line allowed the Monarchs (4-1) to rule the first half by taking as much as a 17 point lead with less than six minutes to go during the first half.
King's went into halftime with just a 38-30 lead after a ferocious Drew run in the final five minutes. The Rangers went on an 11-2 run to close the half, but more damage could have been done in cutting into the King's lead. Drew went just 4-of-8 from the free throw line during that stretch.
Drew kept itself in the game by establishing a presence in the paint with Huelbig and junior center
Kevin-Michael Miller each netting 10 points in the first half. Miller got his 10 via a perfect 4-of-4 mark from the floor.
The Rangers trailed for the entire game, and their attempt to make a run back into contention using the three-point shot did not go as planned. The Blue & Green improved its free throwing shooting percentage in the second half to .875 (7-of-8), but the Rangers were 2-of-13 from beyond the arc during their second half comeback attempt. While the shots weren't falling for Drew, King's went on a 7-0 run to take a strangle hold on the game early in the second half. The Monarchs finished shooting 51-percent from the floor en route to the non-conference victory.
Drew cut the lead to single digits with 9:29 to play with a three-point by senior guard
Robby Bier, but King's would quickly rebound to regain it's double-digit lead and hold it until game's end. The home team held a 43-32 rebound advantage, and scored 15 bench points compared to Drew's six.
Junior guard
Mike Klinger finished with 12 points, but took just six shots on Tuesday. The co-captain passed out three assists. Huelbig added four rebounds and three steals, while junior swingman
Ozan Yucetepe led the squad on the boards with nine. Miller came up with two blocks in the loss.
Drew continues a four-game stint away from Madison on Wednesday, Dec. 3 for the start of 2014-15 Landmark Conference competition. The Rangers take on The United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point at 7:00 p.m. live on the
Landmark Conference Digital Network.
