Box Score Towson, Md. (February 15, 2014) – The Drew University men's basketball team (10-13, 4-8) dropped a heartbreaker on the road Goucher College (9-14, 4-8) this evening in Landmark Conference action. A late run from the Gophers pushed them by Drew by a score of, 67-63.
The Rangers were led by
Mike Klinger (Franklin Park, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory School). The sophomore guard scored 19 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists in 33 minutes of action for Drew. Classmate
Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds for the Rangers in the loss.
Drew jumped out to an early 7-2 with just under 16 minutes left to play in the first half. Goucher countered the Ranger hot start with a 9-2 run of their own to take an 11-9 lead with 10 minutes left to play in the half. The teams played the final 10 minutes virtually even as the Gophers took a 37-32 lead into the half. Huelbig scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half.
The Gophers continue their attack scoring the first points of the half taking a 39-32 lead. With 11:33 left in the game the Rangers trailed 47-41, but would go on a 17-4 run to take a 58-51 lead with 6:44 left in the game. Klinger scored 15 of his game-high 19 points on the Ranger run. The Gophers responded tying the game, 62-62 with just two minutes left to play. After a missed Ranger jumper, Goucher came down the court drawing a foul and converting from the line taking a 65-63 lead. Alex Noble added two more from the free throw line to give the Gophers a 67-63 victory.
Goucher was led by Kevin Miles who scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Julian Livingston added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Gophers in the victory.
Senior guard
John Ford (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored nine points making his 23
rd start of the season. Sophomore
Brian McLaughlin (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee) played 29 off the bench for Drew, scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds. Junior
Zach Nolan (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) played 19 minutes off the bench for the Rangers scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds.
Drew returns home to Baldwin Gym on Wednesday February 19 for a rematch with Merchant Marine. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m.
