Rangers Drop Conference Game to Catholic

Box Score Madison, N.J. (February 8, 2014) – The Drew men's basketball team (10-11, 4-6) suffered a landmark conference loss at the hand of the Catholic Cardinals (14-7, 8-2), 67-60 this afternoon in Baldwin Gym. The loss drops the Rangers to 4-6 and moves them into fifth in the conference standings.

Sophomore Jason Huelbig (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) led Drew in scoring for the second consecutive game. The Ranger guard scored 20 points, shooting .500 from the field (7-14). Huelbig also grabbed eight rebounds for Drew in the loss.

The first half of play was seemingly dead even between the two schools. A steal and fast-break lay-up by Ranger guard Wally Sajimi (Teaneck, N.J./DePaul Catholic), knotted the game at 14-14 with 10 minutes left to play in the half.  The score was tied six times, three times be each team, and the half six lead changes with Catholic taking a 33-31 lead into the half.

Catholic started the second half on a 5-0 run pushing their lead to 38-31 with 17 minutes left to play in the game. Over the next eight minutes the Cardinals went on an 18-9 run to open up a 16 point lead, 56-40 with just over eight minutes left to play. The Rangers countered with a run of their own cutting the Catholic lead to just three, 59-56 with 4:54 left to play.

Catholic was led by forward Corey Stanford who scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Cardinals in the victory. Bryson Fonville added 10 points and dished out seven assists.

Sophomores Brian McLaughlin (Blauvelt, N.Y./Tappan Zee)  and Ozan Yucetepe (Bursa, Turkey/Westfield (N.J.)) played big minutes off the bench for the Rangers. McLaughlin scored 13 points shooting .500 (3-6) from behind the three-point arc. Yucetepe scored 10 points and tallied two assists for the Rangers.

Drew looks to rebound with another conference game on Wednesday February 12, as they travel to Scranton, Pa. for a rematch with the Scranton Royals. Scranton defeated Drew, 82-72 in their first meeting.
