Mules Kick By Field Hockey, 5-1, With Fast First Half

Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team fell to Muhlenberg College, 5-1, on the road in non-conference action on Friday evening.

Freshman Michele Pozyc continued the sizzling start to her rookie campaign by picking up another defensive save and recording the assist on the Rangers' lone goal of the contest, senior midfielder Melissa Boyd's second goal of the season in the 46th minute.

"Our midfield play was very good today," said head coach Felicia Cappabianca. "Michele Pozyc also continued to impress on defense from the center back position, and showed she has an eye for the attack tonight by getting her first career assist."

Pozyc is swiftly moving up the ranks for most defensive saves in a season by registering a save in her fourth consecutive game. The freshman now has seven defensive saves through five games, which is now tied for eighth in the Drew record books.

The Rangers (0-5) succumbed to another quick start by the opposition on Friday night. The Mules (3-1) kicked into gear early with a goal in the fourth minute when a pass in front of the Drew cage was put away for the 1-0 lead. The Centennial Conference team added goals in the 15th and 30th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime before Drew was able to get a shot off on offense.

Halftime has proved to be effective for the Rangers this season, as again the Blue & Green came out firing after the whistle sounded to start the second half. Drew took its first shot of the game in the 41st minute when a blast by junior midfielder Bea Cannavale was saved. Sophomore forward Huma Sheikh followed with a shot that was blocked as the Rangers kept the pressure on Muhlenberg over a five-minute span.

That pressure led to back-to-back penalty corners, and eventually Pozyc sent a pass from the top of the circle to Boyd, who was waiting at the left post to put Drew on the board and cut the lead to 3-1.

Good defensive play helped keep Drew in the game with defensive saves by senior defender Alex De Sousa and Pozyc in the 51st and 55th minutes, respectively.

Muhlenberg would pull away with insurance goals in the 62nd and 67th minute marks to claim its third win of the season.

Drew wraps up a three-game road stint on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at William Paterson University at 7:00 p.m.
