Rangers Fall in Double Overtime

Box Score WAYNE, N.J. (Sept. 17, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team (0-6) fell to William Paterson University (3-3) by a score of 3-2 in a double-overtime in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers opened the scoring in the 11th minute. William Paterson took advantage of a rebound after junior Drew goalkeeper Sarah Stewart turned away a Pioneer drive with a kick save. Heading into halftime, the Pioneers led the Rangers 1-0.

Drew opened the second half with a flurry of shots in an effort to equalize. The Rangers succeeded in the 44th minute when sophomore forward Huma Sheikh charged hard on a bouncing ball that got away from the Pioneer defense. Skeikh drove one that clanged off the left post and in, and knotted the game up at 1. The goal was Skeikh's second of the season.

Less than a minute later, William Paterson scored again, regaining a 2-1 lead.

In the 53rd minute senior midfielder Melissa Boyd blasted a shot which clanked off the post. The rebound kicked right out to junior midfielder Bea Cannavale, who buried her second goal of the year.

Canavale's equalizer froze the score at 2 until the 70-minute mark, and both squads geared up for overtime battle.

It would take two overtime periods before William Paterson capitalized off of an unforced Ranger mistake. In the 88th minute as the Pioneers were getting ready to drive the ball into the circle on a corner, two Rangers were sent off for jumping the line too early on the corner. It left the Ranger defense vulnerable and the Pioneer attack was able to score the game winner.

Freshman defender Michele Pozyc continued to add to her Division III statistical leading category with two more defensive saves. Pozyc has tallied 9 through 6 games.

The Rangers return home on Tuesday, September 23rd to take on crossroad rivals FDU-Florham in a non-conference tilt slated for a 7:00 P.M. start.
