Box Score MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 27, 2014) – The Drew University field hockey team opened 2014 Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a 6-3 setback to Juniata College at Ranger Stadium.
The Eagles (6-2, 1-0 Landmark) took an early lead and built the advantage to 6-1 with 10 minutes to play, when the Rangers (0-8, 0-1) launched a comeback attempt with two unanswered goals. Juniata would hold off the charging Blue & Green and come away with the conference victory on the road.
Trailing 2-0, the Rangers got on the board in the 17
th minute off a well-executed corner play. Senior midfielder
Melissa Boyd started the play with an insert to freshman defender
Michele Pozyc, who lofted a high pass toward the Eagles' cage. Sophomore forward
Huma Sheikh notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season by deflecting Pozyc's pass into the back of the box.
Drew was forced to play from behind early with Juniata getting the 2-0 lead by the 16
th minute. The Eagles opened scoring in the 10
th minute by scoring on a rebounded shot from Rangers' goalkeeper
Sarah Stewart. Juniata received the 2-0 cushion 15:36 into the game by putting away a crossed bouncing ball.
Juniata would get its two-goal lead back in the 30
th minute when the third different Eagle of the day scored a goal, gathering her own blocked rebound and putting the second shot high over the keeper's head for the 3-1 lead. The Eagles took that lead into halftime after outshooting Drew 11-3 in the opening period.
The Eagles methodically extended their lead in the second half, scoring three more goals off short-distance shots and cleaned up rebounds to take the 6-1 lead. The Rangers, however, kept up the energy and increased their shot and penalty corner output.
Drew's comeback attempt began in the 62
nd minute when junior midfielder
Michelle Fallon had a shot bounce off the Juniata post, but junior
Taryn Murphy was there to put it away for her first goal of the season that cut the lead to 6-2. Fallon followed with a goal of her own three minutes later as Boyd sent in a fast-paced pass toward goal and Fallon got her stick on it for the deflection goal.
Drew returns to non-conference field hockey on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Ranger Stadium to host Wesley College at 7:00 p.m. Landmark Conference play continues on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Susquehanna University at 1:00 p.m.
