MADISON, N.J. (Jan. 10, 2015) – The Drew University men's basketball team dropped a Landmark Conference game to The Catholic University of America by a score of 76-54 on Saturday in Baldwin Gymnasium.
The Rangers were led by junior center
Kevin-Michael Miller's second straight 100-percent field goal shooting game as he dropped 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting and grabbed four rebounds. Miller has made his last 14 field goal attempts and currently leads the nation in Division III field goal percentage with a 78-percent clip.
The Catholic (12-3, 6-0) defense established an oppressive and physical defense that stymied the Rangers' early attempts at offense. Drew (8-6, 4-2), realizing early that shooting from deep – their preferred method of attack – would not be the most effective, began battling in the paint. Miller posted up and dropped in two-pointers.
Miller countered the intense physicality of Catholic by soaring over them, rendering their thick, powerful bodies inactive and ineffective. As Catholic powered to the rack clearing anyone in their way, Miller looped and floated over them, scoring effectively in the process.
The first half belonged to the forwards and for the first time this year, the opposing coaching staff succeeded in shutting down the Landmark's top scorer, junior guard
Mike Klinger. His graceful paint penetrating drives that all year had resulted in crisp layups, resulted in unpleasant swats by the Catholic bigs.
Junior forward
Jason Huelbig, however wasn't interested in unfruitful visits to the basket and used his physicality to convert effectively despite Catholics strong defense.
The Cardinals showcased occasional indiscipline, resulting in nine fouls. Drew made sure to capitalize on whatever they were given, these oft-occurring charity stripe opportunities included. The Rangers were perfect (12-of-12) from the line in the first half.
The Cards thrived on alert guard play, microcosmically represented in the collection of an air ball directly underneath the basket and a reverse lay in to end the half by their point guard, the basket was his 16
th point. The Rangers, coming into the game having nailed more three pointers than any other Landmark Conference team, went into the halftime with zero three-pointers and trailing 35-26.
The fresh set of 20 minutes featured Catholic expanding to a 20-point lead and a 20 percent difference in field goal percentage between the two teams. Drew was shooting field goals at a dismal 30 percent and Catholic, at an efficient 50 percent. With 15 minutes to play, Drew had yet to make a three pointer.
It took until the 14:14 mark for Drew to sink it's first basket of the second half, a second effort try from Miller and a converted and-one put the Rangers down 49-29.
The Rangers will hit the road for their next two conference games, the first of which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Jan. 14 against Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania at 7:00 p.m., the first contest between the two as Landmark Conference opponents.
