MADISON, N.J. (Jan, 19, 2015) – Led by junior forward
Jason Huelbig's third career double-double, the Rangers emerged victorious from their last non-conference game of the year with Medger Evers College by a score of 85-65 on Monday afternoon in Baldwin Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Mike Klinger's 20 points led the scoring charge. He added four assists and three steals. Huelbig's double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) came on 64-percent shooting from the field. Junior forward
Ozan Yucetepe pitched in 14 points and six rebounds. Also in double digits was junior guard
Brian McLaughlin who logged a season-high 11 points and career-high six rebounds.
The Rangers began crackling with energy and employed a persistent full court press defense. Offensively, the Rangers identified and capitalized upon the slack they were granted by the Cougars defense. A few crisp passes around the perimeter would eventually find a wide-open man for an easy three.
The guards were chirping at each other and their dialogue, which included instructions executing their plays as well as anticipation for those of their opponent's, cut across the court as sharply as their passes.
Before four minutes had elapsed, Klinger, Huelbig, and Yucetepe had each nailed treys. Drew forced three straight turnovers, tapping away careless dribbles and taking them on fast breaks. The Rangers' effective defense prompted a 10-0 run and a Cougar timeout with 13 minutes to go in the first half.
With seconds to go in the half the opposing Cougar big man rose up for a two handed slam with the ball slamming off the back of the rim, out and looping to Klinger who took it the other way for a finger roll layup.
Drew's lead had expanded to 35-22 with two minutes to go in the first half. The teams were turning the ball over liberally and 22 of Drew's half-ending 46 points had come off the turnover.
Yucetepe, while attacking the rim like a guard matched up with the opposing big man like a center. He had successfully walked the fine line between aggressive defense and foul trouble. The Cougars' two leading scorers were limited to six points each.
The Cougars entered the half with as many turnovers as field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws combined and Drew led 46-27.
With 13 minutes to play in the game, Drew's lead stood at a comfortable 57-37. It got there on the strength of a deep jumped by Klinger and on the following possession, an aggressive Klinger drive that sent him flying out of bounds and the ball high off the backboard and in. He would convert the and-one and get subbed out.
Drew's pace remained the same as the game coasted to a finish. With three minutes remaining, The Rangers still possessed a 20-point lead that would last until the end.
The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for Drew and will take it back into conference play. Goucher College is next on the agenda and will visit the Rangers on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4:00 p.m. in Baldwin Gym.
