MADISON, N.J. (Jan. 24, 2015) – Sparked by a career-high 24 points from sophomore guard
Courtney Trzasko, the Drew University women's basketball team defeated the Goucher College Gophers in Landmark Conference action by a score of 69-54 on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gymnasium.
Trzasko wasn't the only Ranger (10-8, 4-5) with an impressive point total as four Rangers finished in double-digits for the second straight game. Sophomore guard
Hannah Miller drained 14 points worth of buckets in the contest. Both sophomore forward
Ryan Jackson and junior forward
Courtney Stephens chipped in 11 points each with Jackson hauling in nine rebounds.
Trzasko added on to a hot streak and with her total Saturday, she has netted 60 points in her last four games. The Rangers never trailed in the contest.
Drew opened up an early 7-2 lead before Goucher (4-13, 0-9) pulled within two on the strength of a couple quick turnovers into fast break layups. The Rangers managed to draw a healthy amount of fouls, converting the majority of their charity stripe chances with a 13-of-16 mark by the end of the first half.
A 5-0 run with 8:11 left in the first half expanded upon the Rangers' early lead. The run was driven by aggressive defensive rebounding from Jackson and successful fouls shots at the other end. The run also brought Drew to a 24-17 lead. Drew entered the half leading 34-26. Miller led the scoring with 12 but the second half would belong to Trzasko.
The Rangers never maintained a cushion of fewer than six points and eventually expanded their lead to double digits on the strength of efficient outside shooting and a revamped attack on the boards. Drew finished 9-of-20 as a team from beyond the arc, while outrebounding the Gophers slightly 33-32.
Unsuccessful Ranger drives to the rim resulted in free throws and those that didn't ended with layups. A sharp Jackson jumper taken parallel with the baseline expanded Drew's lead to 58-48 with 4:15 to play. The Ranger's equal contributions spread across the roster brought the game to a secure ending and they won their second straight game.
Conference play rolls on as the Rangers embark on a four-game road trip beginning in Scranton on Wednesday, Jan. 28 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Drew will return home on Wednesday, Feb. 11 to host Moravian College. The Landmark Conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
