BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Jan. 8, 2015) – The Drew University women's basketball team dropped a Landmark Conference battle at Moravian College by a score of 68-55 on Thursday evening.
Â
The Rangers (7-6, 2-3) were neck and neck with the Greyhounds (7-6, 3-2) all throughout the first half but eventually succumbed despite a season-high point total from junior guard
Courtney Stephens. Stephens dropped 18, one shy of her career-high and snagged 12 rebounds in the process. Stephens locked in a double-double with the performance and sophomore forward
Ryan Jackson threatened, but ultimately did not earn one of her own. Jackson finished with eight points and nine rebounds.
Â
Like most of the Rangers' success, Stephens' contributions mainly took place in the first half of play. Drew survived a poor shooting half due to Moravian's inability to score as well. Both teams shot in the 30's percentage-wise and the majority of the shots came from Stephens. The score was low but close early on.
Â
Stephens sank the first shot of the game with a layup in the lane. The basket boosted Stephens' confidence, evidently, as she proceeded to take a huge chunk of shots as the half continued. Stephens would later be involved in a flurry under the basket as she went up for a bank shot off the dribble, missed, got her own rebound, was blocked, and snagged the rebound again. Stephens proved a constant presence in the Rangers' offense. By half's end she had hauled in seven rebounds and dropped 12 points on 6-of-17 shooting.
Â
Jackson, meanwhile was in the process of filling out her usually all-encompassing stat sheet. The majority of her work came in the post as she lofted in one-handed buckets. She also found time to spread four assists around the floor.
Â
Post work, however was a quality that Moravian dominated. What led to their eventual second-half explosion was the effective play of their forwards in the paint and on the boards. Moravian's Alexis Wright pulled down 20 rebounds while adding 11 points. Not to be outdone, the Greyhound's Alesha Marcks added a double-double of her own, netting 22 points on 10-of-21 shooting and 11 rebounds.
Â
These two led Moravian to a second-half surge and raised their field goal percentage from out of the basement it was buried in come halftime. Moravian still finished with a pedestrian 37-percent shooting figure. The Rangers ended with a 33 percent mark from the field.
Â
Drew drifted and eventually fell victim to the Greyhounds and its third conference defeat after a successful Greyhound stint from the free throw line late in the game. With plenty of conference action to go, the Rangers will look to right the ship on Saturday, Jan. 10 when they take part in a Baldwin Gymnasium basketball doubleheader against The Catholic University of America. The women's game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip with the men set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
