Velazquez Nets Game-Winner in 2-1 Victory at CUA

WASHINGTON (OCT. 10, 2015) – The Drew University men's soccer team (9-2-2, 2-1-1) continued Landmark Conference action on the road this evening with a 2-1 victory over The Catholic University of America Cardinals (5-7-1, 2-2). A pair of second half freshmen goals in a six-minute span helped lead the Rangers to a win in come-from-behind fashion.

Drew and CUA were originally scheduled to start play at 1 p.m. this afternoon, however due to inclement weather the past few days the game was changed to start at 5 p.m. on the CUA Stadium turf with the grass on campus deemed unplayable.

Freshman midfielder Guy Zeplovitch brought the Ranger attack to life netting an equalizer and his first career goal in the 71st minute bringing the score to 1-1. Alexi Velazquez would net his first career goal just six minutes later which would prove to be the game-winner in the 77th minute off an assist from Bass Etta-Ashu.

Since joining the Landmark Conference back in 2007, Drew and Catholic have clashed 10 times, including one meeting in the Landmark Conference Championships semifinal. With this evening's win, the Rangers picked up just their second victory over the Cardinals and their first since 2008.

The Rangers' offense was on the attack from the start tallying 15 shots and five corners for the game. In the first half the Ranger offense fired off five shots, landing three on goal. Drew was able to draw five Cardinal fouls and one corner in the half. CUA matched Drew's first half intensity taking six shots and scoring the game's first goal in the 38th minute taking a 1-0 lead into the half.

Junior goalkeeper John Marques made his 13th start of the season in net for the Rangers. Marques went the distance making five saves, on six shots faced, carrying his season total to 53, ranking him third in the Landmark Conference.

The Rangers return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 14 to face St. Joseph's College (LI) in their non-conference finale at 4:30 p.m. in Ranger Stadium.
