MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2015) – Despite outshooting Goucher College 37-7, the Drew University men's soccer team allowed the only goal of the contest in the 60
th minute, leading to a 1-0 loss at Ranger Stadium.
Junior forward
Bass Etta-Ashu led the charge with nine shots. Sophomore forward
Benjamin Audi and junior forward
Cole Leckburg combined for 13 shots. Freshman defender
Marlon Rodriguez put three shots on net.
The Rangers (10-3-2, 2-2-1) swept all the momentum toward their half of the pitch in the opening half. While the offense tore up the penalty box, the defense stymied Goucher's (5-8-1, 2-3) tries to even get the ball downfield. Drew held the Gophers without a shot in the half, while registering 18 of their own.
Seven of those shots came from Etta-Ashu. The striker headed up the instant Ranger rush in the half. The Rangers rang the post and danced dangerously close to the goalmouth. Despite relentless offensive play in the first 45 minutes of play, Drew couldn't convert. The half ended with the teams at a scoreless draw.
The second half grabbed the baton from the first, as the squads came out firing. After a Gopher header crept just over the crossbar, Drew streaked downfield, Audi cutting into the middle of the field, found a flying junior midfielder
Joe Sollod who charged even closer still. He suddenly dropped it for junior midfielder
Gio Howells, freezing it with his right foot. Howells let go an aggressive straight-line strike that kissed the right post, out of play.
The scoreless draw weighed the battle down, with Drew spending inordinate amounts of time dangerously close to the net. With 34 minutes to go, the Rangers were outshooting the Gophers 24-1 with chances mounting on each other.
Suddenly, an innocent enough appearing run by Goucher in the 60
th minute was the one that proved to break the ice. A Gopher wing sent a cross in and from within the box and an attacker flicked in a header. Goucher's fourth shot was the game's first and only goal.
Landmark Conference play continues on for the Rangers when they take to the road to face The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The match is scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. start on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
