MADISON, N.J. (October 22, 2015) – A late first-half goal from sophomore forward
Madi Sheetz and freshman goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan's first career shutout helped lock in the Rangers' 1-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Thursday night, under the lights at Ranger Stadium.
Sheetz registered the only score of the contest, locking in her eight goal of the season. Feeding her the ball was senior forward
Kirby Clark who earned her second assist of the year.
The Ranger defense shut down the Spartans and kept the ball far away from the cage. Callaghan registered seven saves in the shutout. With the effort, Callaghan's season-long save total stands at 154 and counting, good for ninth all-time in program history for a single season.
"Ryann is our rock," Sheetz said.
With a minute to go in the first half, three Rangers converged on a loose ball dangerously close to the opposing cage. Clark forced a turnover from two Spartans in the box and wrangled the loose ball. She then pitched it ahead toward the baseline, wound and sped it across to her teammate on the opposite side of the cage. There to receive the dish was Sheetz who smacked it home, burying the game's first goal.
"Everything finally clicked on that one," Sheetz said, "Kirby gave me a great cross and I put it in the net. It felt awesome. With three games to go, we're pumped up, we feel like we're going to keep the winning streak going."
Drew hung on to its 1-0 lead until the very end. Despite the clock striking zero, the Spartans were awarded two penalty corners. The first was flicked away by a Drew defender, and the other saved by Callaghan and kicked well out of danger to signal the end of the contest.
Drew maximized its chances in the early going. Senior midfielder
Michelle Fallon earned a penalty shot when she was fouled within the box. She set herself and whipped in a try that rang the post and kicked out of danger.
The Rangers return to Landmark Conference play when they head to Elizabethtown, Pa. for their final road match of the season. The tilt is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 24.
