MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 27, 2015) – Senior captain
Michelle Fallon's second hat trick of the season lifted the Drew University field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Keystone College on Tuesday afternoon at Ranger Stadium to conclude the 2015 non-conference schedule.
Senior forward
Kirby Clark added two for the Rangers (3-13), her second and third goals of the season. Sophomore
Madi Sheetz scored her ninth goal of the season and second in the last three games. Fallon's three-pack gets her to the 10-goal mark for the season. On the defensive end, freshman goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan made seven saves, while senior
Taryn Murphy picked up a defensive save to help preserve the victory.
"Our overlapping today was excellent, and we've been working on our finishing in the circle, so to see it pay off in a game was great," said head coach
Jess Gray. "We also followed up a lot of rebounds, which is important for us. We thought Ryann did a great job with big saves, making clears and being aggressive."
The Giants (4-10) were the first to strike with a tally in just the fourth minute of play off. The Rangers would trail for the next 12 minutes until the referees called for a penalty stroke in the 16
th minute. Fallon stepped up to the spot and buried the shot to knot the game at 1-1. A similar play occurred seven minutes later when Keystone was called for another infraction, and Fallon's number was called again. She picked her spot and put the Rangers ahead 2-1 in the 29
th.
The ball was rolling heavily in Drew's favor as the momentum shifted near the end of the first half. Less than a minute after Fallon's go-ahead goal, Clark pushed the lead to 3-1 after collecting a pass from junior midfielder
Huma Sheikh, turning and banging a shot into the back of the box. The score would hold at 3-1 heading into halftime.
Sheetz helped start the attack in the second half by dropping off a pass from the baseline and finding the stick of Clark, who scored her second straight to put Drew up 4-1. The Rangers kept the pressure on as Fallon got her hat trick with a high shot from 15 yards away to the back of the net.
Fallon earned her seventh point of the night with a nice pass to Sheetz on the far post before the sophomore forward buried a shot for the 6-1 advantage that would hold until the final whistle.
Drew outshot the Giants 25-9 while putting 16 of those shots on target. Keystone, however, had the edge in penalty corners at 12-7.
The Rangers have one game left in the 2015 season at home on Senior Day. Drew takes on Moravian College at 1:00 p.m. at Ranger Stadium after honoring its four members of the Class of 2016.
