MADISON, N.J. (Oct. 3, 2015) – The Drew University field hockey team dropped its Landmark Conference home opener on a cold and dreary Saturday afternoon, 3-1, to Susquehanna University at Ranger Stadium.
Sophomore forward
Madi Sheetz scored for the Rangers (1-9, 0-2 Landmark) in the 63
rd minute to cut the Crusaders' (8-3, 1-1) lead to 3-1. Sheetz tied the team lead in goals scored for the season with that tally, but the comeback attempt would stop there as Susquehanna used two goals in the game's opening seven minutes to pick up the road victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ryann Callaghan notched 13 saves, the fifth game this season with at least that many stops. The rookie keeper eclipsed the century mark in saves with 101 this fall.
The Crusaders held advantages in shots (22-7) and penalty corners (9-4). Their first goal came just 41 seconds into the match, and they made it 2-0 six minutes later. Susquehanna added more insurance in the second half with a tally in the 43
rd minute.
The Crusaders missed two penalty strokes in the first half, one in the 8
th minute and another in the 27
th. Both strokes were saved by Callaghan.
Offensively for the Rangers, senior midfielder
Michelle Fallon took three shots, two on goal, including a crafty redirection that missed just wide in the second half. Senior forward
Kirby Clark fired two shots, while sophomore defender
Michele Pozyc placed her only shot of the day on target, forcing a save by the Crusader goalkeeper.
The Rangers return to action on Saturday, Oct 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Ranger Stadium, where they host The Catholic University of America, currently ranked No. 18 in the national poll.
