BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2015) – Senior forward
Emma Campbell scored a trio of goals for her third career hat trick as the Drew University women's soccer team tied Moravian College on the road, 4-4, in a wild Landmark Conference regular season finale on Saturday at sundown.
The Rangers (8-9-2, 2-4-1 Landmark) needed a win to leapfrog the Greyhounds (4-9-3, 2-3-2) for the fourth and final playoff berth in next week's Landmark Conference playoffs. Drew finishes the regular season with seven points behind Moravian's eight.
The eight combined goals were the most in a Drew women's soccer game since the season opener in 2013, a 5-4 victory against Elizabethtown. That game also featured the first career hat trick by Campbell. The senior striker now has three to her name, recording one in each of the last three seasons. After her final regular season game, Campbell ranks third in the Drew record books with 49 goals and 111 points.
In the must-win game, the Rangers struck first off a Campbell strike in the 20
th minute, produced by a long pass from sophomore
Thalia Santacruz. Campbell passed along the giving attitude by assisting on Drew's second goal, which gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead when freshman
Meghan McDermott slotted a shot past the Moravian keeper in the 34
th minute.
Senior
Sara Nash made three saves in her 45 minutes of play in the first half, helping Drew take the 2-0 lead into intermission.
Moravian came out inspired in the second half and took just 19 seconds to cut the Drew lead in half. Less than four minutes later, the Greyhounds knotted the score at 2-2, the second of four tie scores on Saturday including 0-0 to start the game.
Campbell struck again five minutes later in the 54
th to again put Drew ahead off a feed from McDermott, who returned the favor from Campbell's assist on her goal in the first half. The lead was short lived, however, as the Greyhounds answered in kind with their own goal within less than five minutes off the clock.
Following the pattern of quick responses, Campbell got her hat trick in the 63
rd minute, 4:14 after Moravian's previous goal. This one was an unassisted blast that put Drew up 4-3. Drew would attempt to hold the slim lead as the sun was setting over Bethlehem, but Moravian would have the last word by scoring with 2:22 left on the clock to make it 4-4, forcing overtime.
Drew took the only two shots in overtime, one forcing a save off the line by a Moravian defender and the other prompting a save by the Greyhounds' goalkeeper. The score would hold as a tie, but in Moravian's favor as it sealed a trip to the Landmark Conference playoffs.
Moravian outshot Drew, 17-12, in the contest with eight of its shots on target. The Rangers were more efficient with their shots, placing nine of 12 on goal.
