WAYNE, N.J. (Oct. 6, 2015) – A trio of Rangers ripped the back of the net in the Drew University women's soccer team's 3-1 victory at William Paterson University in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.
Seniors
Shannon Slowey and
Emma Campbell, and freshman
Meghan McDermott all scored for the Rangers (5-6-1), who matched their season-high for goals in a game. Junior goalkeeper
Andee Higgins played a scoreless first half in net, making four saves and picking up her third win of the season, while senior
Sara Nash held the lead in the second with four saves and a goal against.
"We're finding success over these last two games by creating our chances, and finishing them with confidence and poise," said head coach
Christa Racine. "Confidence and momentum are important heading back into conference play this weekend, so we will spend the week reflecting on the good things we did today."
With a goal and an assist on Wednesday, Campbell became the third player in Drew women's soccer history to reach the 100 career points milestone. Now with 102 points on 45 goals and 12 assists, she ranks third in the program record book for career points. After a slow start by Campbell's standards, the Rangers' senior captain has gone on a tear with the team now at the midway point of the 2015. With her insurance goal on Wednesday, Campbell has scored all of her season's seven goals over an eight-game stretch.
"Emma has been playing really well lately," Racine said. "It's a great moment for her to reach 100 points because not many players that have worn this uniform can say that. We're hoping that she carries that into a big game at Catholic on Saturday."
The Pioneers (3-6-2) held the offensive advantage by outshooting Drew, 11-9. But for the second straight game, the Rangers were efficient on the attack by putting five of nine shots on target, and three of those into the goal. Early offense, particularly, was the key on Wednesday as Slowey started things off in the 19
th minute when her shot tipped off the William Paterson keeper's fingers and trickled over the line. It was Slowey's third goal of the season.
McDermott netted her second career goal just 10 minutes later to hand Drew the most dangerous lead in soccer, 2-0. Campbell created the goal by serving a perfect pass from the left baseline into the middle of box, where McDermott was waiting to finish the play with a strong shot to the top of the goal.
William Paterson inched closer in the 79
th minute to cut the Drew lead to 2-1, but the comeback attempt was abruptly halted by Campbell's tally in the 86
th minute. The senior striker cut past a defender on the left side of the field before slotting home a shot to the right side of the net for the insurance tally. Meanwhile, Nash made three saves in the game's final eight minutes to preserve the road victory.
Campbell threatened twice before that goal earlier in the second half. She had back-to-back shots go off the post and then the crossbar in the 58
th and 60
th minutes, respectively.
Drew concludes its four-game road stint on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 3:30 p.m. for a Landmark Conference contest at defending league champions The Catholic University of America.
