STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 18, 2015)
– The Drew University women's basketball team (2-1) traveled 40 minutes down I-95 this evening to the College of Staten Island (1-1) for its first road contest of the season. Behind 28 points from junior guard
Hannah Miller, the Rangers defeated the Dolphins, 71-57.
Tonight's 71-57 victory over CSI marked just the eighth time in program history the Rangers and Dolphins have squared off. The game also marked the first time the two have faced each other since the 2009 season which showcased a 57-50 Drew victory. The all-time series advantage belongs to Drew, 5-3. The 14-point margin of victory is the largest since Drew defeated CSI back in 1995, 68-34.
Miller's 28 points tonight marked the eighth time the Ranger junior has eclipsed the 20-point total for a game and also tied a career-high set back in January 2015 when she dropped 28 against Catholic in Baldwin Gym. "Hannah played really well tonight," says Rangers Head Coach
Brittany Gaetano. "I'm extremely proud of the way she played, her leadership and maturity was really on display," Gaetano added on the performance of her junior co-captain. Miller added five rebounds and two assists to her stat line. Senior co-captain
Courtney Stephens recorded her 13th career double-double in the Rangers' win, scoring 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in the game. All of Stephens' rebounds came on the defensive glass.
The Rangers were rewarded two free throws to open the game as result of a technical foul issued to CSI before the game's tip. Drew would jump out to an 8-0 lead with 6:57 left to play in the first period behind five points from Miller. Following some back-and-forth action the Rangers rallied off a 7-2 run in the final 2:40 of the first period to take a 22-11 lead into the second period.
Courtney Stephens would take the reigns in the second period scoring nine of the Rangers 18 points for the period. "Courtney does a little bit of everything for us," says Gaetano. "She plays with such confidence and it provides a huge spark for our team and calms everyone down especially playing in such a tough environment."
Drew would take a 40-22 lead into the locker room for halftime.
Stephens would pick up right where she left off in the first half scoring the first three points of the second half extending the Ranger advantage to 21, 43-22. A 14-6 run over the final 6:40 of the third period by the Dolphins would cut the Ranger lead to 15 heading into the fourth and final period. CSI continued to chip away at the Ranger lead getting as close as 11, but Miller would bury the game for the Rangers in the exact same place she started it scoring the final seven Drew points from the free throw line.
Drew shot 44% from the field making 22 of their 50 attempted shots, including an outstanding 41.7% (5-12) from behind the arc. The Rangers also shot 22-27 from the free throw line, good for 81.5% on the night, the highest percentage for the season. "We've been working on this in practice," added Gaetano. "That percentage just proves the focus the girls had throughout the night for this game."
The Rangers will enjoy a six-day break before returning to the court at home in Baldwin Gym on Tuesday, November 24, at 5:00 p.m. as they play host to Wilkes University in the opener of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.
