(Nov. 24, 2015) – The Drew University women's basketball team (2-2) continued its 2015-16 campaign at home in Baldwin Gymnasium on Tuesday evening as they played host to the Colonels of Wilkes University (1-3). A pair of huge second half runs led the Colonels to a 59-54 victory over the Rangers in the non-conference contest.
Offensively, the Rangers were led by senior co-captain
Courtney Trzasko, who scored nine points in the loss. Trzasko shot .500 from behind the arc, knocking down three of her six attempted shots. She also added four rebounds for Drew in defeat.
For the second time in as many games the Rangers would draw first, finding their way of the scoreboard behind a three-pointer from
Sam Lane. Lane finished the game with nine points and added eight boards and two assists to her stat line in the loss. Wilkes would respond with a 7-3 run to take a 7-6 lead with five minutes to play in the first period. Drew would finish the period on a 14-6 run behind five points from Trzasko to take a 20-13 at the end of the first period. The Rangers and Colonels would trade baskets in the second each scoring 10 points in the period. Drew would take a 30-23 lead into the locker room for halftime.
The Colonels came out of the halftime break and took charge of the game by scoring the first four points of the half to pull within three, 30-27. The Rangers would respond with four quick points of their own before Wilkes would close the third on a 15-5 run and taking its first lead of the game since 7-6 back in the first period. Wilkes led 42-39 heading into the fourth and final period of play. The Colonels would extend their lead as high as nine at 51-42. A 7-0 response from the Rangers would close the gap to just two points, 51-49, with 3:18 left to play in the game. One minute later, a pair of
Kati Yext free throws would tie the game at 51-51. Wilkes would outscore Drew 8-3 over the final two minutes of play to come away with the 59-54 victory.
Junior forward
Ryan Jackson finished the game with 11 rebounds to lead the Rangers on the glass. Senior
Courtney Stephens added seven points and seven rebounds for Drew in the setback.
Drew will enjoy a nine day lay off before returning to the court as they will travel to Long Island for a conference clash with The United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, December 2nd. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
